Chapter Twenty
Lumen woke, neck sore and one arm numb after falling asleep tangled up in Finley’s embrace. The rest of her body was magnificently tender and stretched and used. One of his arms was twined around her back, fingers tangled in strands of her pale hair, the other grasped possessively over her hip, just where it was when she sank into sleep.
He huffed and pressed his lips against her hairline and her eyelashes brushed against his jaw.
"I feel too lazy for the army today," he said, voice as soft as the moment she found herself in.
This was… peaceful. Not just a tentative ease framed by awkwardness and anger as it had been with Dominic. The contrasts in her relationship with the General had muddled the shape of any happiness there had been, but this—this exact morning with Finley—was simple. Easy.
"Can it be ignored?" she asked.
Finley hummed and kissed her hair again. "I think so."
"For how long?"
He stilled against her and then rolled them on the bed, the pair of them both grimacing at the dead weight of their sleeping arms. He glanced briefly down the length of her before covering her bare body with his, doing a better job of blocking out the biting chill of the room than the thin blankets they’d been under.
"How long will you want me, my lady?" His voice was light but there was serious study in his gaze and Lumen busied herself with tracing the soft lines of muscle against his chest.
There was a weight in his question and the answers that came to Lumen’s mind left her edgy and nervous. It was better to tease. To stay simple.
"The morning, at least," she said, smiling and glancing up into glass green eyes. His sleep-soft expression sharpened but he was ducking down before she could assure him she was only teasing, taking a heady, deep kiss from her lips until she was clinging to him, making room for him between her thighs. All the ache of the night turned into a hollow craving and he released her, his body tense and hers limp.
"And who will you be in need of once you are finished with me, hmm?" he purred against her lips.
Lumen stiffened and pulled away from the feel of his mouth on her neck. Their eyes met, both wary, and simplicity evaporated. She scrambled back on the bed, pulling herself out from under his body. Finley huffed, breath stroking over her breasts as he pushed himself up, wincing with eyes slammed shut.
"I didn’t mean- Lumen, that’s not what I…"
She found a blanket pushed aside, near to sliding to the floor and dragged it around her, her back pressed to a cold and rough headboard. Finley sighed and sat up on his heels, cock hanging half hard between his thighs, and a pale, scarred hand reaching up to scrub at his face.
"That came out wrong," he said, shoulders slumping. "I know none of this has been your choice."
Lumen bristled and snapped, "This was. You were my choice, Finley.
